v8.0

These release notes list all information related to version 8.0.x

The hardware supported for these versions is listed under Supported Hardware and the Known Issues are documented here.

Changes from 7.0 to 8.0#

Integrated Components#

  • Yocto 6.0 LTS "Wrynose"
  • Linux 6.12 LTS with KED backports and patches
  • U-Boot 2026.04 with KED backports and patches (i.MX, STM32MP1 platforms)
  • TI platform: TI vendor U-Boot v2026.01 (u-boot-ti-ked)
  • TI platform: Linux 6.12 with TI vendor backports and patches (linux-ti-ked)

Container Image#

The dedicated container registry and image for this release is

registry.kontron-electronics.de/sw/ked/meta-ked-bsp/kas-ked:5.4

Core/Distro Changes (all HW Platforms)#

  • Upgrade from Yocto v5.0 "Scarthgap" to Yocto v6.0 "Wrynose"
  • Upgrade U-Boot to version 2026.04
  • Strip the NXP (meta-freescale) and ST (meta-st-stm32mp) SoC vendor layers in favor of mainline components; TF-A is now provided by meta-arm
  • Switch linux-ktn to a kernel integration branch workflow
  • Add optional support for building a stable kernel from the meta-linux-mainline layer
  • Add meta-ked-ti for the OSM-S AM62L platform
  • Add M-core (remoteproc/RPMSG) support, including a new mcore-autoload recipe
  • Generate and package CycloneDX SBOMs for released images (via meta-cyclonedx), including boot firmware in the SBOM
  • CI: Upload generated SBOMs to Dependency-Track
  • Automatic saving of the default U-Boot environment when no valid environment is found in flash
  • Convert fw_env.config to YAML format
  • CI: Use kas v5.4 by default
  • CI: Use a shared hash equivalence server
  • CI: Add u-boot environment file and .bmap in the release artifacts
  • Testing: Add automated EEPROM, uC and warm-reboot test cases
  • Testing: Add U-Boot environment read/write from Linux test case
  • Testing: Add USB OTG device role test case
  • Testing: Various CI and test-log readability improvements (colored logs, ASCII console logs)

i.MX Platforms#

  • i.MX93: Add backports for Cortex-M lifecycle management in TF-A
  • i.MX93: Enable the thermal driver
  • i.MX8M: Enable the PCIe driver for Linux 6.12
  • i.MX8MP: Enable IMX219 camera overlays
  • Add M-core (remoteproc/RPMSG) support: grant A55 RWX access to CM33 TCM, add RPMSG devicetree overlays and U-Boot script support
  • Fix U-Boot UBI boot error handling
  • Fix i.MX93 ELE firmware dependency in U-Boot

STM32MP1 Platform#

  • Support for booting from NOR/NAND Now it is possible to boot into a root filesystem located in NAND/UBIFS
  • Fix boot targets and eMMC partitions for NOR boot
  • Add optional support for OP-TEE as the BL32 secure monitor
  • Enable missing regulator drivers
  • Various TF-A devicetree fixes (PLL nodes, pinctrl include, formatting, OP-TEE dependency)

TI Platform#

  • Add initial support for the Kontron OSM-S AM62L platform (kontron-am62l), based on the TI vendor U-Boot v2026.01 (u-boot-ti-ked) and TI vendor Linux 6.12 kernel (linux-ti-ked)
  • Update U-Boot to support reading from the extended OTP

Breaking Changes#

  • Removal of the NXP (meta-freescale) and ST (meta-st-stm32mp) SoC vendor layers may require adjustments to downstream layers/configs that relied on them.

Known Issues#

  • i.MX6UL, STM32MP1 and i.MX8MP: USB OTG interface host mode is not supported in U-Boot.
  • i.MX6UL, STM32MP1 and i.MX8MM: U-Boot environment in NOR flash is not accessible from Linux.
  • i.MX8MP: There are issues with reading EDID data from some HDMI monitors. This can result in wrong display mode settings (DRM Linux Driver Bug).
  • i.MX8MP: CSI Camera interface Issue (Hardware Bug)
